Todo projeto de autotransformação é um círculo vicioso. Dogen, um mestre zen do século XIII, dizia que a primavera não se torna verão e, da mesma forma, a lenha não se torna cinzas: há primavera e então há verão; há lenha e então há cinzas. Pelo mesmo argumento, um ser vivo não se torna um cadáver, e uma pessoa não iluminada não se torna um Buda. Segunda-feira não se torna terça-feira; uma hora não se torna quatro horas. Assim, tentar se tornar um Buda, atingir a iluminação ou a liberação ou o supremo altruísmo, é como tentar lavar sangue com sangue, ou polir um tijolo para fazer um espelho. Como disse Chuang-tzu: “Você vê seu ovo e espera ele cantar”.

O egoísmo de uma pessoa egoísta é precisamente que ela está tentando se tornar mais feliz, mais forte, mais sábia, mais corajosa, mais gentil e, em suma, altruísta. “Não é a sua eliminação do eu”, disse Chuang-tzu, “uma manifestação positiva do eu?” E novamente: “Aqueles que dizem que teriam o certo sem seu correlato, o errado, ou o bom governo sem seu correlato, o desgoverno, não apreendem os grandes princípios do universo, nem a natureza de toda a criação. Pode-se também falar da existência do céu sem a da terra, ou do princípio negativo  sem o positivo , o que é claramente impossível. No entanto, as pessoas continuam discutindo isto incessantemente.” O comentário se aplica igualmente a todos os projetos de auto-aperfeiçoamento por meio de gurus, meditações, prática de ioga, auto-aceitação, psicoterapia e até mesmo o viver-no-presente por inteiro. De tais disciplinas, pode-se aprender apenas que são autocontraditórias, como levantar os dois pés do chão puxando os tornozelos. E nisso há, talvez, algum valor, pois libera nossa energia psíquica e física de tarefas impossíveis para o possível: podemos sim plantar sementes, colher frutos, construir casas, cantar canções, fazer amor e continuar vivendo até pararmos.

Estou apontando isto para melhorar o estado da humanidade, e assim me contradizendo? Não, estou dizendo isto para que possamos ser livres para plantar sementes e colher frutos. Isto não tem nada a ver com melhor ou pior, progressão ou regressão. Estes são julgamentos, e está bem dito: “Não julgueis, para que não sejais julgados; pois com o juízo julgares, serás julgado, e com que medida medires, serás medido”. E se você disser: “Mas isso é em si um julgamento!” você ainda está julgando. É melhor não julgar? Não, é simplesmente viver e morrer, dia e noite, ir e vir, um estado de coisas em que não há nem o bom em si nem o mal em si.

O Caminho perfeito é sem dificuldade,
Desde que evite pegar e escolher.
Só quando você parar de gostar e não gostar
Tudo será claramente compreendido. . . .
Não se preocupe com o certo e o errado.
O conflito entre o certo e o errado
É a doença da mente.

É verdade que, enquanto permanecemos na doença da mente, a “doença” é “errada”, e o conflito  persiste. Mas isto ainda é julgar o julgamento, e julgar o julgamento do julgamento — o círculo vicioso e a regressão infinita que os budistas chamam de samsara, a situação da gaiola de hamster de tentar ter vida sem morte e certo sem errado. Tais círculos viciosos não podem ser interrompidos por preparações, métodos ou disciplinas espirituais. Tudo isto são adiamentos. A única maneira de parar é parar — instantaneamente, agora — pela ação, não pelo pensamento. Esta parada pode acontecer, assim como podemos plantar sementes e colher frutos – embora nenhuma ação real seja algo “feito” por um “eu” conceitual. A divisão entre executor e ação, conhecedor e conhecido, é uma divisão de palavras, não de natureza.

Só existe sofrimento, ninguém que sofra;
Há o feito, mas não o fazedor;
O Nirvana é, mas ninguém o buscando;
Há o caminho, mas ninguém que o percorra.

Em suma, a questão é que todo projeto de retificação do mundo ou de si mesmo é uma fantasia conceitual, porque, enquanto permanecemos no mundo dos conceitos, não podemos identificar o certo sem o contraste com o errado. Isto é tão verdadeiro politicamente quanto psicologicamente, pois seguir ideologias de direita ou de esquerda desvia nossa atenção de problemas específicos, assim como projetos de melhoria do mundo nos desviam de plantar sementes e colher frutos. Em nome de tais projetos, obliteramos populações inteiras para sua própria libertação, amontoamos criminosos em prisões para sua reabilitação e isolamos insanos em asilos na esperança desesperada de que isto de alguma forma os torne sãos.

Assim, os chamados negros têm uma coisa contra os chamados brancos  porque os brancos judaico-cristãos equiparam o preto com o mal e a cruzada por um cosmos absurdo em que haverá direita sem esquerda. Infelizmente, as pessoas de cor foram infectadas com esta religião e estão lutando  por algo mais do que direitos iguais. Mas quanto mais nos envolvermos em possíveis debates entre o certo e o errado destes problemas, mais destruiremos uns aos outros para nosso próprio bem e negligenciaremos o plantio de sementes e a colheita de frutos.

A “doença da mente” é a confusão do que pode ser dito, ou pensado, com o que pode ser feito e com o que realmente acontece. O solver desta confusão vem com ser/estar-ciente, não com o pensamento, mas é frustrado pelos projetos de ser/estar-ciente e não pensar, ou melhor, suspender o pensamento. A ideia de que é melhor, ou “a meta”, livrar-se desta confusão ainda é confusão e é chamada de o *fedor do Zen*. Os conceitos de saúde e doença, bem e mal, melhor e pior, têm o mesmo uso e relação com a vida que os de longo e curto, alto e baixo para carpintaria: mesmo um pequeno pedaço de madeira pode ter três polegadas de comprimento. Até o câncer é chamado de crescimento, e quando Ramana Maharshi estava morrendo de câncer, ele resistiu aos médicos, dizendo: “Ele também quer crescer. Deixe-o." Este é, talvez, um exemplo extremo de renúncia – não de amor ou energia – mas de querer o certo contra o errado e, assim, renunciar à própria separação de tudo o que acontece, que é o que Tillich chamou de “a coragem de ser”.

Esta atitude pode ser chamada de fatalismo em que, no entanto, não há um destino: as próprias reações subjetivas de cada um são todas de uma peça com o que, objetivamente, acontece – e, portanto, você não se intromete no mundo. Esta é a atitude taoísta de wu-wei, de não interferência com o Tao, o Curso da Natureza. No entanto, wu-wei não é um preceito ou um método a ser seguido ou não: é a percepção de que você mesmo não é algo separado do Tao que pode ou não interferir nele. Experimente sua própria decisão como um evento que acontece como a abertura de um botão de flor.

Esta súbita virada de conscientidade é como olhar para pinturas não objetivas ou abstratas como se fossem fotografias coloridas — podem ser marcas em mármore ou plantas microscópicas. Instantaneamente, toda a qualidade da pintura muda: ela se torna tridimensional e vividamente articulada. Ainda mais notável é a mudança quando a experiência subjetiva é tomada como algo acontecendo por si mesmo, como o vento, ou – o que dá no mesmo – quando a experiência objetiva é tomada como algo que você está fazendo, como respirar.

Every project for self-transformation is a vicious circle. Dogen, a Zen master of the thirteenth century, said that spring does not become summer and, in the same way, firewood does not become ashes: there is spring, and then there is summer; there is firewood, and then there are ashes. By the same argument, a living being does not become a corpse, and an unenlightened person does not become a Buddha. Monday does not become Tuesday; one o’clock does not become four o’clock. Thus to try to become a Buddha, to attain enlightenment or liberation or supreme unselfishness, is like trying to wash off blood with blood, or polishing a brick to make a mirror. As Chuang–tzu said, “You see your egg and expect it to crow.”

The selfishness of a selfish person is precisely that he is trying to become happier, stronger, wiser, braver, kindlier, and, in short, unselfish. “Is not your elimination of self,” said Chuang–tzu, “a positive manifestation of self?” And again, “Those who say that they would have right without its correlate, wrong, or good government without its correlate, misrule, do not apprehend the great principles of the universe, nor the nature of all creation. One might as well talk of the existence of heaven without that of earth, or of the negative principle  without the positive , which is clearly impossible. Yet people keep on discussing it incessantly.” The comment applies equally to all projects for self–improvement through gurus, meditations, yoga practice, self–acceptance, psychotherapy, and even total living–in–the–present. From such disciplines one can learn only that they are self–contradictory, like lifting both feet off the floor by pulling the ankles. And in this there is, perhaps, some value, for it releases our psychic and physical energy from impossible tasks for the possible: we can indeed plant seeds, gather fruit, build houses, sing songs, make love, and go on living until we stop.

Am I pointing this out to improve the state of mankind, and so contradicting myself? No, I am saying it so that we can be free to plant seeds and gather fruit. This has nothing to do with better or worse, progress or regress. These are judgments, and it is well said, “Judge not, that you be not judged; for with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged, and with what measure you measure, you shall be measured.” And if you say, “But that is itself a judgment!” you are still judging. Is it better not to judge? No, it is simply living and dying, day and night, coming and going, a state of affairs in which there is neither the good by itself nor the bad by itself.

The perfect Way is without difficulty,
Save that it avoids picking and choosing.
Only when you stop liking and disliking
Will all be clearly understood. . . .
Be not concerned with right and wrong.
The conflict between right and wrong
Is the sickness of the mind.

True, while we remain in the sickness of the mind, the “sickness” is “wrong,” and the  conflict persists. But this is still judging the judgment, and judging the judgment of the judgment—the vicious circle and the infinite regression which Buddhists call samsara, the squirrel–cage situation of trying to have life without death and right without wrong. Such vicious circles cannot be stopped by preparations or methods or spiritual disciplines. These are all postponements. The only way to stop is to stop—instantly, now—by action, not thought. This stopping can happen, just as we can plant seeds and gather fruit—though no real action is something “done” by a conceptual “me.” The division between doer and deed, knower and known, is a division of words, not of nature.

Suffering alone exists, none who suffer;
The deed there is, but no doer thereof;
Nirvana is, but no one seeking it;
The path there is, but none who travel it.

In short, the point is that every project for righting the world or oneself is a conceptual fantasy, because, while we remain in the world of concepts, we cannot identify right without the contrast of left or wrong. This is as true politically as it is psychologically, for the following of right–wing or left–wing ideologies diverts our attention from specific problems, just as projects for world improvement divert us from planting seeds and gathering fruit. In the name of such projects we obliterate whole populations for their own liberation, crowd criminals together in prisons for their rehabilitation, and isolate crazy people in asylums in the desperate hope that this will somehow make them sane.

Thus so–called black people have a thing against so–called white people  because the Judaeo–Christian whites equate black with evil and crusade for a preposterous cosmos in which there will be right without left. Unhappily, the colored people have been infected with this religion, and are crusading  for something more than equal rights. But the more we become involved in possible debates between the rights and wrongs of these problems, the more we shall destroy each other for our own good, and neglect the planting of seeds and the gathering of fruit.

The “sickness of the mind” is the confusion of what can be said, or thought, with what can be done and with what actually happens. Release from this confusion comes with awareness, not thinking, but is frustrated by projects to be aware and not to think or, rather, to suspend thought. The idea that is it better, or “the goal,” to be rid of this confusion is still confusion, and is called the stink of Zen. The concepts of health and sickness, good and evil, better and worse, have the same use and relation to life as those of long and short, high and low to carpentry: even a short piece of wood can be three inches long. Even cancer is called a growth, and when Ramana Maharshi was dying of cancer he resisted the doctors, saying, “It wants to grow, too. Let it.” This is, perhaps, an extreme example of renunciation—not of love or energy—but of willing right as against wrong, and thus of renouncing one’s own separateness from everything that happens, which is what Tillich called “the courage to be.”

This attitude might be called a fatalism in which, however, there is no one fated: one’s own subjective reactions are all of a piece with what, objectively, goes on—and therefore you do not intrude yourself upon the world. This is the Taoist attitude of wu–wei, of noninterference with the Tao, the Course of Nature. However, wu-wei is not a precept or a method to be followed or not followed: it is the realization that you yourself are not something apart from the Tao which can, or cannot, interfere with it. Experience your own decision as an event which happens like the opening of a bud.

Such a sudden flip of consciousness is rather like looking at nonobjective or abstract paintings as if they were colored photographs—it might be of markings in marble or of microscopic plants. Instantly, the whole quality of the painting changes: it becomes three–dimensional and vividly articulate. Even more remarkable is the change when subjective experience is taken as something happening of itself, like the wind, or—what comes to the same thing—when objective experience is taken as something which you are doing, like breathing.
