405. Oh, no mundo há muitos Homens da Caverna além de você, antes de você, neste momento:
A Caverna está com ele, o Amigo está conversando com ele; mas seus olhos e ouvidos estão selados,  de que adianta?
O Califa disse a Layla: “És tu aquela por quem Majnun foi distraído e desviado?
Tu não és superior a outros justos.” “Fique em silêncio”, ela respondeu, “já que você não é Majnun.”
Quem está acordado  é o mais adormecido ; sua vigília é pior que seu sono.

410. Quando nossa alma não está desperta para Deus, a vigília é como fechar nossas portas .
Durante todo o dia, dos bufês da fantasia e dos  perda e ganho e do medo do declínio,
Não resta a ela  nem alegria nem graça e glória nem caminho para viajar para o céu.
O adormecido  é aquele que tem esperança de toda fantasia vã e negocia com ela.
Diabolum per somnum videt tanquam virginem caelestem, deinde propter libidinem effundit cum diabolo aquam .

405. Oh, in the world there is many a Man of the Cave beside you, before you, at this time:
The Cave is with him, the Friend is in converse with him; but your eyes and ears are sealed,  what does it avail?
The Caliph said to Layla: “Art thou she by whom Majnun was distracted and led astray?
Thou art not superior to other fair ones.” “Be silent, “she replied, “since thou art not Majnun.”
Whosoever is awake  is the more asleep ; his wakefulness is worse than his sleep.

410. When our soul is not awake to God, wakefulness is like closing our doors .
All day long, from the buffets of phantasy and from  loss and gain and from fear of decline,
There remains to it  neither joy nor grace and glory nor way of journeying to Heaven.
The one asleep  is he who hath hope of every vain fancy and holds parley with it.
