[To requite injuries with good deeds.] To allay the main discontent, But only in a manner that will certainly produce further discontents can hardly be called successful.

Therefore the Sage behaves like the holder of the left-hand tally, Who stays where he is and does not go round making claims on people.

For he who has the “power” of Tao is the Grand Almoner; He who has not the “power” is the Grand Perquisitor. “It is Heaven's way, without distinction of persons, To keep the good perpetually supplied.”

A. Après que le principal d’une contestation a été arrangé, il reste toujours des griefs accessoires, et la charité ne revient pas à l’état où elle était auparavant [froissements].

B. [Aussi le Sage ne conteste-t-il jamais, malgré son droit.] Gardant son talon de souche, il n’exige, pas l’exécution [de ce qui est écrit].

C. Celui qui sait se conduire d’après la Vertu du Principe, laisse dormir ses titres. Celui qui ne sait pas se conduire ainsi, extorque ce qui lui est dû.

D. Le ciel est impartial. [S’il était capable de quelque partialité,] il avantagerait les gens de bien, [ceux qui font comme il est dit en C. Il les comblerait, parce qu’ils ne demandent rien].

On a beau apaiser un grand ressentiment ; s’il reste toujours d’autres causes de ressentiment, comment peut on être bien avec les autres ? En répondant au ressentiment par la Vertu.

C’est pourquoi le Saint tient la moitié gauche de la taille, mais ne réclame rien aux autres.

Celui qui a la Vertu ne veille qu’à la taille ; celui qui n’a pas la Vertu veille à percevoir [son dû].

La Voie du ciel ne connaît pas de favoritisme ; elle donne toujours l’occasion d’être bien avec les autres.

Paraître apaiser un grand ressentiment et le garder plus grand, mais secret, les hommes s’imaginent que voilà la tranquillité et la concorde. Aussi, le Sage garde tout écrit en son côté gauche et ne reproche rien aux hommes. Celui qui a la vertu concentre peu à peu sa puissance ; celui qui n’a point de vertu la disperse peu à peu par son agitation. L’homme qui suit la Voie ne redoute rien ; il est uni, en elle, à tous les hommes droits.

Mesmo após a reconciliação, o grave desacordo sempre deixará algum ressentimento.

Então, o que fazer para agir de acordo com o bem?

Por isso o Santo-Homem guarda a parte mais desvantajosa nos contratos e nada exige dos homens.

Quem possui a Virtude é o artesão da concórdia.

Quem não possui a Virtude é o artesão da discórdia.

O Tao do Céu não tem afetos, mas sempre coopera com os homens.

Falha é uma oportunidade. Se culpas alguém, não há fim para a culpa. Portanto a Mestre preenche suas próprias obrigações e corrige seus próprios erros. Faz o que necessita fazer e nada demanda dos outros.

When a reconciliation is effected [between two parties] after a great animosity, there is sure to be a grudge remaining [in the mind of the one who was wrong]. And how can this be beneficial [to the other]?

Therefore [to guard against this], the sage keeps the left-hand portion of the record of the engagement, and does not insist on the [speedy] fulfilment of it by the other party. [So], he who has the attributes [of the Tao] regards [only] the conditions of the engagement, while he who has not those attributes regards only the conditions favourable to himself.

In the Way of Heaven, there is no partiality of love; it is always on the side of the good man.
