There was something formless yet complete,
That existed before heaven and earth;
Without sound, without substance,
Dependent on nothing, unchanging,
All pervading, unfailing.
One may think of it as the mother of all things under heaven.
Its true name we do not know;
Were I forced to say to what class of things it belongs
I should call it Great [ta]
Now ta also means passing on,
And passing on means going Far Away,
And going far away means returning.
Thus just as Tao has “this greatness” and as earth has it and as heaven has it,
So may the ruler also have it.
Thus “within the realm there are four portions of greatness”,
And one belongs to the king.
The ways of men are conditioned by those of earth.
The ways of earth, by those of heaven.
The ways of heaven by those of Tao, and the ways of Tao by the Self-so.

A. Il est un être d’origine inconnue, qui exista avant le ciel et la terre, imperceptible et indéfini, unique et immuable, omniprésent et inaltérable, la mère de tout ce qui est.
B. Je ne lui connais pas de nom propre. Je le désigne par le mot Principe. S’il fallait le nommer, on pourrait l’appeler le Grand, grand aller, grand éloignement, grand retour, [le principe de l’immense évolution cyclique du cosmos, du devenir et du finir de tous les êtres].
C. Le nom Grand convient [proportionnellement] à quatre êtres [superposés] ; à l’empereur, à la terre, au ciel [triade chinoise classique], au Principe. L’empereur doit sa grandeur à la terre [son théâtre], la terre doit sa grandeur au ciel [qui la féconde], le ciel doit sa grandeur au Principe [dont il est l’agent principal]. [Grandeur d’emprunt, comme on voit. Tandis que] le Principe doit sa grandeur essentielle, à son aséité.
Duyvendak
Il y avait quelque chose dans un état de fusion avant la formation du ciel et de la terre. Tranquille et immatérielle, elle existe seule et ne change pas [de caractère] ; elle circule partout et ne se lasse pas. On peut la considérer comme la Mère de tout sous le ciel. Je n’en connais pas le [vrai] nom, mais je le désigne par l’appellation « Voie ». Essayant autant que possible de la définir par un nom, je l’appelle « grande ». « Grand » veut dire « procéder » ; « procéder » veut dire « s’éloigner » ; « s’éloigner » veut dire « revenir » [à son contraire].
Donc : la Voie est grande ; le ciel est grand ; la terre est grande ; et le roi est grand. Il y a dans le monde quatre grandes choses, et le roi en est une. Le roi se règle sur la terre, la terre se règle sur le ciel, le ciel se règle sur la Voie et la Voie se règle sur le Cours Naturel.
Matgioi
Avoir des choses permet de faire quelque chose auparavant, le ciel et la terre sont nés ; les voilà unis, les voilà Profonds. La chose [Il] apparaît seule , mais ne change pas. Il va partout, et ne s ’arrête pas. Il convient qu’Il [la chose] soit l’origine de tous les hommes. Moi, je ne connais pas son nom ; son caractère s’écrit la Voie. – Étant immense, son nom se traduit par : être grand. Être grand se traduit : aller partout. Aller partout se traduit : traverser. Traverser se traduit : retourner. Aussi la Voie est grande ; le Ciel est grand ; la Terre est grande ; le Roi aussi est grand. Au milieu, il y a donc quatre grandes choses, mais le Roi est seul visible. L’homme obéit à la Terre ; la Terre obéit au Ciel ; le Ciel obéit à la Voie ; la Voie obéit à son Maître .

Há um ser indeterminado em sua Perfeição que já existia antes do Céu e da terra, impassível! imaterial!
Ele permanece só, imutável, onipresente e imperecível. Pode-se considerá-lo a Mãe do Universo.
Não conhecendo seu Nome, designo-o pela palavra Tao. Esforçando-ME para dar-lhe nome, chamo-o Grande. Sendo Grande, ele escapa.
Escapando, ele se afasta.
Afastando-se, ele retorna.
O Tao é grande, o Céu é grande, a terra é grande, e o rei também é grande.
Há quatro coisas grandes no mundo, e o rei é uma delas.
O homem segue a lei da terra.
A terra segue a lei do Céu.
O Céu segue a lei do Tao.
O Tao segue a si mesmo.
Mitchell
Havia algo sem forma e perfeito antes do universo ter nascido.
Sereno. Vazio.
Solitário. Imutável.
Infinito. Eternamente presente.
É a mãe do universo.
Na falta de um melhor nome, chamo o Tao.
Flui através de todas as coisas, dentro e fora, e retorna à origem de todas as coisas.
O Tao é grande.
O Universo é grande.
A Terra é grande.
O Homem é grande.
Estes são os quatro grande poderes.
O Homem segue a Terra.
A Terra segue o Universo.
O Universo segue o Tao.
O Tao segue só a si mesmo.
Legge
There was something undefined and complete, coming into
existence before Heaven and Earth. How still it was and formless,
standing alone, and undergoing no change, reaching everywhere and in
no danger [of being exhausted]! It may be regarded as the Mother of
all things.
I do not know its name, and I give it the designation of the Tao
[the Way or Course]. Making an effort [further] to give it a name I
call it The Great.
Great, it passes on [in constant flow]. Passing on, it becomes
remote. Having become remote, it returns. Therefore the Tao is
great; Heaven is great; Earth is great; and the [sage] king is also
great. In the universe there are four that are great, and the [sage]
king is one of them.
Man takes his law from the Earth; the Earth takes its law from
Heaven; Heaven takes its law from the Tao. The law of the Tao is its
being what it is.
